About myID

What is myID?

The microbiome refers to the entire community of microorganisms—such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa—that live on and inside the human body. When we talk specifically about the gut microbiome, we mean all the microbes that reside in the digestive system.

Are all microbes in our bodies beneficial? What’s the difference between good and bad microbes?

Not all microbes are helpful. Our gut contains both beneficial and harmful microorganisms. When harmful microbes outnumber the beneficial ones, it can disrupt the balance of the gut microbiome and negatively affect health.

What role do beneficial microbes play in the body?

Helpful gut microbes are essential for maintaining overall health. They support the body in many ways, including:

  • Strengthening the immune system

  • Protecting against harmful pathogens

  • Breaking down certain foods (like fiber) that the body can’t digest on its own

  • Producing important nutrients and vitamins

  • Supporting brain development and function

  • Contributing to mental well-being

  • Improving skin health

  • Enhancing overall wellness

  • Aiding recovery from illness

  • Helping muscles recover more quickly after exercise
